Yoga for Thyroid

There are mainly two types of thyroid imbalances – Hypothyroidism caused by insufficient secretion of thyroid hormones and Hyperthyroidism caused by having excess secretion of thyroid hormones. . Few of the symptoms which are seen are – weight loss, hair loss, sweating, heat intolerance, infertility, dry hair, constipation, fatigue, memory loss, muscle aches.

Yoga therapy can be used as an effective supplementary treatment to manage thyroid imbalance.

One should consult a physician before you start practicing yoga as it is important to check which kind of thyroid you are suffering from. Also, these yoga techniques work on coping with the symptoms better and are not a substitute to medication (though in some cases the need for medicines may reduce with consistent yoga practice over a period of time).

Note: Although all yoga asanas are considered to be good for both hypo and hyperthyroidism patients, recommended some of the postures below which can be particularly useful. You need not restrict your practice to only these poses; check with Yoga teacher on more asanas based on your condition.

 

The Asanas which can be practised in Hypothyroidism:

  • Sarvangasana
  • Viparitakarani
  • Janu sirsasana
  • Matsyasana
  • Halasana
  • Marjariasana

Asanas which can be practised in Hyperthyroidism :

  • Setubandhasana
  • Child pose
  • Shavasana
  • Purvottanasana
  • Marjariasana 

Ujjayi, Bhramari (Bee Breath), Nadi shudi and cooling pranayamas such as Sheethali and Shitkari are also considered to be very effective in dealing with hyperthyroidism symptoms.Also, it’s good to practice a few minutes of meditation everyday in both hypo and hyperthyroidism.
