Mysore Ashtanga Yoga Classes

Laghutvam

3+1 Weeks, Mon-Fri | 5-00 to 6-30pm | Intermediate, Advance

“Laghutvam” is derived from two Sanskrit words – ‘Laghu’ and ‘Tattvam’. Laghu (लघु) in Sanskrit means lightness and Tattvam or Tattva (तत्त्व) means principle. Put together, this forms the Laghutvam program, where the teacher leads the session to achieve lightness through practice.

Laghutvam is a teacher-led class that follows a thoughtfully designed sequence, offering a guided and immersive practice experience. Each session is structured to create continuity and rhythm, allowing practitioners to synchronise breath with movement while cultivating steadiness, awareness, and presence throughout the practice.

Every class is carefully sequenced to prepare the body progressively and systematically. The practice gradually builds from foundational movements to more demanding postures, ensuring that each asana is approached with adequate preparation. This intelligent progression enables practitioners to explore the practice safely while developing strength, flexibility, stability, and endurance in a balanced manner.

The practice unfolds through a series of focused themes, with each day dedicated to a particular category of asana. Mondays explore hip opening, Tuesdays forward bends, Wednesdays backbends, Thursdays twists, and Fridays balancing postures. This thoughtful progression offers balanced attention to different movement patterns, supporting steady development while deepening appreciation for the distinct qualities and benefits of each group of postures.

Throughout the practice, emphasis is placed on precise alignment, mindful transitions, and the coordination of breath with movement. Clear verbal guidance supports practitioners in refining their understanding of each posture, encouraging them to move with intelligence rather than force. As awareness develops, practitioners learn to recognise stability and ease within the practice, allowing effort and relaxation to exist in harmony.

Beyond the physical aspects of the practice, Laghutvam encourages the cultivation of lightness as an inner experience. As the body becomes stronger and more responsive, the breath steadier, and the mind quieter, practitioners begin to experience greater clarity, balance, and ease. This quality of lightness is not merely physical but reflects a more integrated and mindful approach to practice.

Suitable for practitioners of different levels, Laghutvam provides a structured and supportive environment in which students can establish consistency and discipline in their yoga journey. Beginners benefit from the guidance of a led class, while experienced practitioners are able to refine their practice through greater attention to alignment, breath, and awareness.

Laghutvam offers an energising and purposeful group practice that brings together discipline, flow, and mindful movement, creating a practice that is both dynamic and meditative while supporting the holistic development of body, breath, and mind.
