  About IndeaYoga

Why IndeaYoga?

During Yogacharya Bharath Shetty’s teaching experience of more than 2 decades he tried to understand his students’ idea of practice, their expectation from yoga and the short cuts taken to meet the expectations.  He observed that the focus for yoga was limited to the physical and external level. In pursuit of happiness, people went on holidays to exotic location, went shopping etc. only to realise it offered fleeting happiness - once it loses its appeal they are on to the next thing. Material things can be enjoyed with an understanding that none will ever provide lasting source of peace, happiness or contentment.

With this backdrop originated ‘tamaso ma jyotirgamaya’ the Shanthi Mantra from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad which says ‘Lead me from darkness to inner light’ and from this ‘IndeaYoga’ came into existence.

Indea’ is combination of two words -

In    = refers to ‘inner’ in English

Dea = is ‘light’ in Sanskrit

When put together ‘Indea’ means ‘inner light’

Yoga’ personifies the journey of moving from external darkness to inner light. This inner light guides us during our arduous journey through life. The inner light brightens all aspects of life, driving away darkness (of ignorance) and usher in the light (of knowledge).

With Presence’ implies ‘Being awake’, ‘Being in the moment’, ‘Living mindfully’.

Being awake means being in the moment; we are not missing life as we walk through it. Being awake means we are conscious of what is going on inside us, as it happens.

Learning to live mindfully with a heart that is open to all life—its pain and pleasures, ups and downs—is how we come to know real peace, happiness, and contentment.

IndeaYoga, With Presence’ was founded with the philosophy to activate each practitioner’s inner light and enable him/her to lead life mindfully.  To do this, Yogacharya designed series of practices to bring about coordination between body, breath and mind.

  The Yogacharya

Yogacharya Bharath Shetty is the first yoga teacher in India to be certified as E-RYT 500 from Yoga Alliance. He also has RCYT and RPYT to his credit. Having more than 2 decades of yoga teaching experience, he has trained more than 650 teachers from over 60 countries.

Bharath Shetty started practicing yoga at an early age, and was further drawn to the practice after it helped him recover from chronic asthma.  His first teacher was Yogacharya Kumara in Shantivana Trust, a Yoga and Naturopathy Centre.

An accident with a bus in 1993, incapacitated his legs, through his recovery, he could experience the strength of his inner self, he believes was acquired through practice of yoga. In 2002 he one pointedly studied and trained with world renowned Yoga Guru, Padma Vibhushan B.K.S. Iyengar, in Pune, India, which helped further deepen his knowledge and insight of yoga.  He decided to become a professional yoga teacher to pursue his passion and use his immense knowledge to spread the benefits of yoga to the world.

He is a certified Yoga Teacher by the Indian Yoga Institutes, Vivekananda Kendra, Bangalore (A-Grade) and International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centre, Trivandrum (Grade-Excellent) and was awarded with Yoga Siromani and Yogacharya titles on completion of his training. He is the winner of Himalaya Yoga Olympiad (Indian National Yoga Championship) Haridwar and Bangalore in 1998 and 2001, respectively.

Bharath believes the key to tapping into yoga's transformative powers is through parampara (lineage).  He hopes to continue to pass on the knowledge that he has gained from his Guruji with his students and together spread the wealth of knowledge with as many people, as everyone deserves Arogya (Health) and Aananda (Bliss).

He founded the 'Creative Yoga Center' in 1998 at Bangalore and this marked a new beginning in his teaching career.  In 2005 he relocated to Mysore and rechristened his school.  He has been conducting Mysore Style classes and Teacher’s Training courses, which are internationally recognized by Yoga Alliance USA.

Bharath is a presenter at International Yoga Festival every year at Paramarth Ashram Rishikesh and conducts workshops regularly around the world.

He is also managing ‘Indea Foundation Charitable Trust’ which provides education scholarships to under-privileged students.

Teacher Training

Yogacharya Bharath Shetty exclusively designs the Ashtanga yoga and Hatha yoga teacher training programs at IndeaYoga. With more than 2 decades of teaching experience, he puts in his profound knowledge on yogic sciences in the training content and structure. These yoga programs focus on training teachers on a holistic level and we believe that learning is a continuous process. Therefore, apart from the actual training period, we also offer students the much-needed support before and after the yoga teacher training programs. One can attend the Mysore Style Classes at IndeaYoga for 1 to 3 months as a preparation for getting trained as a teacher. During this time, the student is exposed to our style of practice and hence, teaching others will flow naturally.

A student may also stay with us after they have completed their yoga teacher training course for deepening their practice. Selected students may also choose to stay with us for Karma Yoga. All Karma Yogis get an opportunity to practice in our classes and assist the teachers at IndeaYoga. They may also get opportunities for assisting or hosting Yogacharya Bharath Shetty at various events and workshops around the world.

IndeaYoga teachers may also affiliate to our school if they decide to teach and spread our style of yoga back in their place. We always help and support our teachers in terms of teaching methodologies, asana techniques and aspects of running a yoga shala successfully. Based on teaching experience, we also plan to award teachers with higher grades.

Our Community

In a bid to strengthen the ties and build better relationships with the members of our community and our teachers, IndeaYoga is nurturing plans to introduce memberships and affiliations. Our intention is to create a close-knit international community of teachers and practitioners, and provide them a stronger platform for learning, sharing interests, discussions, and research and to simply connect individual yogis from different parts of the world. It is our duty to support our teachers worldwide and we believe this move will help them identify, recognize and establish themselves better. We welcome suggestions related to this; please feel free to drop in mails or contact us.

Our Teachers

Our teachers are more than 650 in number and are spread over 60 countries around the world. While every teacher adds his/her own flavor to teaching yoga, the distinctive methods taught at our institute are evident. The IndeaYoga style of Hatha yoga and Ashtanga yoga strictly adheres to our motto “Na hathat, na balath” meaning no force, no pressure. A good number of our teachers have built strongly knit yoga communities in their countries and that makes us very proud! At the end of the day, that is our major concern – to make yoga accessible to every human being on this planet. We believe that everyone deserves to be healthy and happy.

Practice of Meditation and Pranayama techniques that instills a state of bliss on the individual. IndeaYoga’s vision is Health and Bliss for all; and the overall objective of our Arogya and Abyasa systems is to balance and stabilise our practitioners mentally and direct them towards the state of Ananda.

Health isn't a goal; it is lifestyle.

Our Beginner Series, formerly the Therapy Series, was designed at IndeaYoga for complete beginners as well as people with health challenges. The Arogya approach was developed to improve aspects of health and fitness in the practitioners. The asanas and practices allow the individual to transition into the next stage of practice, the Abhyasa.

“It is only when the correct practice is followed for a long time, without interruptions and with a quality of positive attitude and eagerness, that one can succeed.” – Patanjali At IndeaYoga, the Foundation Sequence is the prescribed practice. The Sequence is developed by the Yogacharya after years of observation and study, backed by his extensive teaching experience. The practice makes one healthy and strong and is developed to bring about a balance between the ida and pingala (heat and cold) in the pranic body.
